The project covered four sites in Mombasa, Embu, Kilifi and Meru. This information sheet illustrates the Hospital Maintenance Engineers School at Kilifi and Clinical Officers School at Mombasa. Triad developed type designs for the projects and implemented the four projects concurrently. Emphasis was laid on ease of maintenance and clay projects were selected for their durability. The schools were constructed under four separate contracts which were administered simultaneously and the programme was carried out on time and within the budget. The facilities designed include students accommodation, catering facilities, classrooms, libraries, laboratories, training workshops (metal work, hospital equipment, plumbing, carpentry and electrical). Housing for teaching and administrative staff was constructed for each project, and each site was landscaped. All hot water requirements were provided by the use of solar heating systems. Triad headed a multi-disciplinary team which included Educational Planners and Engineers. Initially an education plan was developed in consultation with the University administration and faculties, taking into account the National Plan for University Development. The architectural and engineering investigation comprised the preparation of a complete inventory of the university’s existing buildings and infrastructure. The out-turn from the Education Plan established a growth sequence for the University in faculties, students and staff facilities and from this a phased Master Plan was prepared. The project was carried out over a period of two years and involved extensive consultations with the University authorities. William Holden Wildlife Education Center

The centre and its hostels are used by Wildlife Clubs for education camps. The design compliments and blends in with the forest. The scale of the buildings has been minimised and buildings have been sited to avoid cutting trees. Materials were selected for their sympathy with the environment. Local stone, gum poles, stone and tile floors have been used in the construction. Building form and orientation are dictated by the climate (strong sun and heavy rain) and the high altitude. Enrolled Community Nursing School

The school is residential, with students accommodated in shared rooms. The facilities on site include a kitchen and dining rooms and teaching facilities. The difficult site involved a series of terraces and complex retaining walls and level changes. The project was constructed in locally available materials, principally clay products, to minimize maintenance costs. Garba Tula School

The school consists of a single stream primary school, with associated dormitories, dining and kitchens, special classrooms and staff housing. The project was built in an isolated area of Northern Kenya. The project has a resident population dependant on its own services in excess of 1000 people and full power generating, water treatment and effluent processing plants have been installed. Particular attention was paid to the environmental design. The altitude of Garba Tula is 2000 and the climate is hot. Cross ventilation and a solar roof system have been successfully combined to produce buildings which are cool and pleasant to work in.
